Thabo Mbeki

April 30, 2007

Yeah, I know. I didn’t know who he was either.

That is, until I discovered WhoYouShouldKnow.com.

who

So one day I’m on the subway in Chicago and some dude sits next to me – the train was full so, you know, I forgave him for being in my space. But then he broke the cardinal rule of the subway – he talked to me! – a crime just a bit less heinous than making eye contact. So he asked for directions in some accent I couldn’t pinpoint. I decided to be friendly – cuz, you know, I am sometimes – and I asked him where he was from. He named some country that began with an L, I think. The blank look on my face probably gave me away. He said, “Ya, Americans don’t know about anything outside their country.”

Well, I’m sure I sneered at him before I flounced off clutching my $58 Starbucks chai latte, but I have to admit he was right. We are globally illiterate.

So make our country proud. Learn about the leaders of the world! Look smart at cocktail parties! Finish that crossword puzzle! But most of all, never EVER let a tourist make an ass of you again.

Monkey Mail

April 28, 2007

Every now and then you find yourself in a situation where something just needs to be said, but everyone involved is just too nice to say it. Hey I know! Let’s send a monkey to do the dirty work!

untitled

Click HERE to see the monkey in action.

Ha! Choose your monkey, dress him (or her) in funny clothes, and make him talk!

While this is quite self-amusing (I’ve been playing with my monkey for over an hour now), Monk-E-Mail travels through email…so share the love!

Inevitable

April 26, 2007

It had to happen. Jesus has been spotted on Google Earth floating over Mount Sinai:

What’s that? You can’t see him? Here the folks at Metro.co.uk have kindly made things a little clearer:

I don’t know…I think it looks more like Buddha.

What to Rent?

April 22, 2007

I have one of these mail-order movie services. Not Netflix, the other one. Yeah – the one with the primary colors that only stocks movies that reflect family values. Yeah that one. I have noticed lately that I’m getting emails telling me my queue is getting low. What to put in…what to put in…? Hey I know! I’ll go to What to Rent and let someone else do the messy work of making a decision.

So you enter all this fluffy information about yourself, and they recommend a movie you’ll like, based on the info you enter. Supposedly the site has an 80% satisfaction rate. So, you might get a bum steer…but probably not!

And…in honor of Earth Day…one more plug to Save the Rainforests. Who says little ol’ you can’t a difference?

Got Cash?

April 19, 2007

Ok, I’m about to show you what a geek I am. Don’t run away! Planning for retirement can be fun!

Input your info and it’ll tell you how much of your current salary you should be putting aside to make sure you have enough cash in your golden years. To me, using this calculator felt a bit like having a bucket of ice water dumped on my head. Ok, never mind – don’t go there.

Freak Out the Future You

April 18, 2007

Did you ever wish you lived in the future, where people wear silver outfits with big boots and take soma after work and eat recycled trash for dinner and drive cars that hover and sleep in bullet-shaped beds? Well, one day you will. And when you get there wouldn’t it be cool to get an email from the you that lived back in day of the first hybrid, the first clone, and the worst president in the history of the US?

Write yourself an email now…and send it to the future you!!

Go HERE.

Happy Tappy

April 14, 2007

I’m tired. I just took an online test and now I’m blowing off everything resembling responsibility for the rest of the night. Blah blah blah…back to the funnies!

Ever had a song in your head and you couldn’t quite put your finger on the name or artist…or even the tune? This site is super cool. You can use your space bar to tap in the beat of the song and it’ll figure out for you those elusive details. I typed in the beat to the theme from “Grease” – why that song, I don’t know. I do find it a bit disturbing that that’s what first came to mind…but I digress. Anyway, it didn’t get it – the Song Tapper thought it was some tune called “Savior” by an band named “Skillet” (?). Anyhoo…it’s a nice diversion.

Cool Sign

April 12, 2007

I couldn’t believe it – I was driving home from work today when I came upon this! Not hard to believe really…out here in the country there’s really not much else to talk about…

Okay, I really found it HERE.

Even the guy in the room with him was shocked!

Giveaway of the Day

April 10, 2007

These guys give away free licensed software everyday. I looked all over their site for a simple answer to my question, “Why?” And yet, I am flummoxed. Maybe I shouldn’t look a gift byte in the mouth. Go HERE.

Save The Rainforest!

April 9, 2007

Hey – I just helped preserve 11.4 feet of rainforest! And I got my first blog comment! It’s a good day.

If you too would like to save a chunk of rainforest the size of a living room,
GO HERE.

Every day you can click on the appropriate link and the companies sponsoring these good deeds will supposedly halt the tractors. I haven’t actually seen money change hands yet, but I like to think a simple mouse click can make a difference.

Cool Email

April 8, 2007

Seriously – This is what inspired this blog:

Big String

I just had to tell someone about this cool free email site! Make emails self destruct, change the email after it’s been opened, send email that can’t be printed or forwarded, see when email you send is opened and how many times it’s viewed…lots of cool stuff! And it’s free with 1 GB of storage.
